Hakone Estates and Gardens

Hakone, one of the oldest Japanese estate and gardens in the Western Hemisphere, is turning 100. Visit Hakone during the Centennial Celebration and join us in support of this hidden jewel. Selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to receive their prestigious “Save America’s Treasures” designation, Hakone is a tranquil place of peaceful reflection in the hills of Saratoga.

San Francisco philanthropists Oliver and Isabel Stine fell in love with the unique beauty of Japanese Gardens at the 1915 Pan-Pacific Exposition. Isabel Stine commissioned Naoharu Aihara, a descendant of a long line of Imperial gardeners, to design and begin building the garden. Using Japanese materials and techniques, artisans constructed the building of the private residence, the Moon Viewing Upper House, the Lower House, and the koi pond.
